Accessible Hydroponics: Removing Barriers in Modern Farming

Wheelchair Weed (Powell River, BC, Canada) is an inspiring example of how accessible hydroponics can enable people living with disabilities to achieve success growing crops on a commercial scale.

Brent Bryksa is the founder and has been cultivating exceptional, medical-grade flowers using Current Culture H2O RDWC systems for about a decade. More recently, Brent achieved Health Canada licensing for Craft Cannabis, allowing him to scale up his cultivation efforts and help more people who rely on clean, high-quality cannabis for a variety of medical conditions.

Under Current RDWC cultivation systems are ideal for wheelchair-accessible hydroponic farming. With medium-less growing via water culture, growers can transplant a large number of plants (700 in this instance) without the need to lift or handle copious amounts of growing medium. The NPI (net pot insert) system not only eliminates heavy lifting, it also significantly reduces the waste stream generated by growing operations, with little or no material to buy or replace between crops.

The Epicenter in RDWC layouts allows for easy automation so that root conditions for each plant in the water culture system are consistent. This enables adjustments, top-offs, and change-outs to be made from a central, accessible point in the facility.

Current Culture H2O can supply systems for almost any practical layout configuration, ensuring there is plenty of room for someone in a wheelchair to access all parts of the crop without sacrificing yield.

Brent has expressed a desire to share in the success he has created by helping others with disabilities develop the unique skills and knowledge he has mastered over the years while growing from a wheelchair.
